“Pronunciation that Erasmus thought mirrored that of the ancient Greeks.” “Thought,” is the operative word, and the flawed logic of Erasmus. Erasmus’ Greek is much like Esperanto, a made-up language. While this may be excellent for a book on hobbits, less so when reading original texts.
We accept the “received text” of the Bible written in Greek but we don’t listen to the people we received it from and how they pronounce their own language. I am not a language expert by any means, but I remember my grandparents who came from one of the Greek islands. There are many places in Greece that are linguistically sheltered. My grandparents spoke with Ancient Greek endings and accents. It bore no resemblance to Erasmus’ contrived exercise. Why not learn Greek that is living organism and with the added benefit of speaking to the Greek people living throughout the world. "One can tell that the pronunciation of Koine Greek that is commonly taught is incorrect, by the written mistakes made in ancient manuscripts. These mistakes reveal that a more accurate pronunciation would closer to modern Greek."
